More information about IPL Light Therapy
We all want clear skin, but nature has a way of sabotaging us with frustration imperfections, especially as we age and sun damage accumulates. Fortunately, skin rejuvenation has advanced beyond the painful procedures of the past. Our IPL photofacial system offers comfortable and effective photofacials for the treatment of sun damage and visible veins.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses short bursts of high energy light to penetrate into the skin and correct a variety of abnormalities. It has been used to effectively treat the redness associated with rosacea, removal of broken facial veins and brown spots associated with sun damage. One of the advantages of IPL is that it is non-ablative and non-invasive, meaning it does not involve surgery or destruction of the skin.
IPL is similar to laser therapies in that it uses a beam of light to target pigmentation and wrinkles and eliminate them with heat. However, instead of using just one color, or ‘wavelength,’ of light, IPL uses a range of wavelengths. This gives IPL the ability to adjust how deep in the skin the light goes and what structures it targets. Different structures in the skin absorb different wavelengths of the light more effectively. This prevents the use of excessive energy and damage to other layers of the skin.
IPL treatments typically involve three to five visits spaced three to six weeks apart. The procedure takes about 20 minutes and patients can return to their normal routine immediately. IPL infrequently causes some side effects including mild discomfort during treatment and skin turning pink, freckling, mild swelling and feeling a little sore immediately after the procedure. Side effects are minimal and typically fade within two weeks of the procedure.

Frequently asked questions about IPL:
Is IPL safe?
IPL is safe, non-invasive, has minimal side effects and requires no
recovery time. IPL is gentler than laser.
What are the risk factors of IPL treatments?
There are relatively few long-term risks associated with an IPL treatment. Short-term
potential side effects of IPL treatment include very minor swelling, redness, and
increased visibility of small capillaries. These symptoms usually begin to disappear
within a few hours of treatment.
Does IPL hurt?
Not really, although the treatment sensation will vary for each patient.
Most of our patients say that it feels like a hot pinprick or the flicking of an elastic
band on their skin. Any discomfort is momentary and there is no lasting sensation.
Are there any side effects?
Immediately after IPL treatment you may notice a slight
reddening of the skin around the hair follicles or slight local swelling which may last
for up to a few hours (or in very rare cases, a few days). These are positive
indications that the IPL treatment was effective.
How long does a treatment take? The IPL treatment itself can take as little as 15
minutes or as long as 2 hours, depending on the area(s) being treated. This will be
discussed with you during your consultation.
Do I need to do anything before my treatment? No major preparations are necessary,
but you will be provided with pre-treatment guidelines discussed with you at your
consultation with Dr. Johnston.
Can I wear makeup following the treatment? Makeup is permitted as long as the skin
not broken. If makeup is not necessary following your treatment then avoid it for 24
hours.
Do I need to avoid sun exposure after the treatment? Yes, all sun exposure should be
avoided for weeks after your treatment. We advise that you wear sunblock with a
minimum of 30 SPF, which is vital to maintain your improved skin. Direct sun
exposure can incur minor complications.
Do I need to anything after my treatment? We will provide you with post-treatment
guidelines, which will be discussed with you.
