Laser treatment targets the dark color of the melanin pigment in the hair follicle. Thus, the root of the hair is compromised with little effect on the skin and surrounding tissue. Since melanin is only produced during the growth phase, the laser light must target the hair follicle during the appropriate portion of cycle. Even in one given body part, not all follicles are in the growth phase of the cycle at the same time. Thus, these treatments need to be repeated at strategically spaced intervals over the course of the hair cycles. This assures us of subsequent hair growth prevention and that the hair follicles are disabled. The laser hair removal procedures at Dean Johnston, MD not only remove hair above the skin, but additionally makes sure you no longer see the dark hairs beneath the skin's surface, sometimes known as the five o'clock shadow.

Due to the advanced laser technology at Dean Johnston, MD, we do not have to see hair to remove it. Therefore, you will not have to grow your hair out prior to laser hair removal procedures.
Q. How does laser hair removal work?
A. Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to achieve smooth skin. A special laser heats the hair root until the entire follicle is destroyed, leaving a silky surface.
Q. Does it hurt?
A. There may be some mild discomfort when the laser is activated. However, it fades immediately after. An anesthetic gel is often applied before the treatment to eliminate any pain.
Q. Will I need multiple treatments?
A. We recommend a series of treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart for effective, long-term results.
Q. How long does it last?
A. If the entire series of laser hair removal treatments are completed, permanent hair reduction is the most common outcome; occasionally touch-ups are performed to obtain the best, longest lasting results.
Q. Is there any downtime?
A. Laser hair removal has no downtime and you can return to your daily routine immediately.
Q. Are there any adverse effects?
A. In some patients, the treated area may become red and show some swelling around each follicle. These disappear within 3 days.
