There are two types of implants available for breast augmentation: silicone and saline. Many patients choose silicone implants for their soft, natural look and feel. Patients who choose saline breast implants are often attracted to the smaller incision area required. When it comes to placing the implant there are three common techniques. The implant can be inserted through an incision made underneath the breast, where it is inconspicuous. Another insertion site is the lower edge of the areola, the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. A third option is a small incision within the armpit, which eliminates any scarring on the breast.

Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is surgery to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. A small incision is made, a pocket is created and a saline or silicone gel implant is inserted under the breast tissue and frequently the underlying muscle as well.

The decisions of implant size, placement, and incision location depend on your individual anatomy and desires and will be discussed with you in depth at your consultation. The procedure usually takes about an hour.

Following your surgery, you will return home in an elastic bra that helps hold your breasts in the correct position. Most patients are able to move around 24 to 48 hours after surgery and are able to return to work within a few days. Your initial discomfort will be controlled with medication. Sutures are usually removed in 5 to 7 days. Soreness and swelling of the breasts may last three to five weeks.
