Elected Best Doctor in OrlandoEven with strict dieting, exercise and healthy living, some people still have trouble eliminating small areas of fat on their body. Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy) is perfect for targeting these “diet-resistant” fat stores. Liposuction is a procedure that improves the contours of the body by removing fat deposits that can’t be eliminated through lifestyle changes. It can slim the thighs, hips and buttocks and can remove isolated pockets of fat in the abdomen, waist, upper arms, back, inner knee, chest area, cheeks, chin and neck.
Dr. Johnston utilizes traditional liposuction techniques as well as state-of-the-art technology to help patients achieve their goals. A good candidate for liposuction is a person of average or slightly above average weight who is in good overall health but has concentrated fatty areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not a preferred option for patients with cellulite; however, it is an excellent procedure for people looking to subtly reshape their bodies.
Traditional liposuction removes fat through a small hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is attached to an aspirator, or vacuum, and the fat is literally sucked away. The entire procedure takes approximately one to four hours and can be done with either general or local anesthesia. There are a variety of techniques used to facilitate body contouring through liposuction and Dr. Johnston will help choose the method best-suited to your needs. In most cases, liposuction is an out-patient procedure, which means you will be able to return home following the procedure.

Liposuction is the vacuuming away of unsightly fat. It can permanently reshape the body by removing fat from the chin and neck, upper arms, abdomen, buttock, hip and thigh area, knees and your upper and lower back. It is not a substitute for exercise and proper nutrition, but it can remove stubborn areas of fat that refuse to respond to exercise and diet.
Dr. Johnston will perform your Orlando liposuction at the surgicenter or outpatient center usually on an out-patient basis (although many patients choose to spend their first night of recovery at the center). Through a very small incision in the skin, a narrow tube or cannula is inserted. As the cannula is moved back and forth through the fat layer, it breaks up the fat cells, which are then suctioned out. Following your surgery you will wear a support garment for several weeks. You may experience swelling and bruising. Any discomfort can be controlled with medication.
Dr. Johnston will also ask you to return to our office for postoperative checkups/treatments that will help your skin to shrink properly so that you will obtain the best results possible. Your recovery period is dependent on the number of areas you have treated.
In general, you will feel tired and sore for 3 to 7 days following your surgery. You will wake up with dressings covered by compression garments that must not be removed for 2 to 3 days following surgery. Then you may shower and replace compression garments that must be worn 24 hours a day for approximately 3 weeks. After that, they must be worn for 2 to 3 weeks at night. You will be able to return to work in approximately 7 to 10 days and can resume normal activity in about 3 weeks.
