Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is now among the top five cosmetic surgery procedures among women. Abdominoplasty surgery has become high in demand for its effective ability to restore the abdomen to a smooth and firm appearance.
After losing a significant amount of weight or a recent pregnancy, excess skin can become flaccid. When our abdomens are stretched with significant weight or pregnancy, the skin loses its ability to naturally bounce back.
Typically, patients come in for an abdominoplasty to remove excess fat that cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise alone. The abdominoplasty removes this excess abdominal skin and can help to reduce fat to provide a smoother appearance to the tummy area. In most cases it can even repair weakened or separated muscle walls by tightening them.
Tummy tucks are generally divided into two categories: complete (full) abdominoplasty and partial (mini) abdominoplasty. The partial procedure is a much quicker and less invasive method, and is usually performed if there is not a large amount of tissue to remove. Recovery time varies but patients typically can return to non-strenuous work within one to two weeks after surgery and can resume most normal activities after a few weeks.
The tummy tuck results in a smoother, firmer and more attractive abdominal profile. Following the procedure, patients can expect their abdomen to remains firm and flat for many years.

A tummy tuck removes fat and excess skin, tightens muscles and creates a flatter and fitter looking midsection. Dr. Johnston will perform your surgery on an outpatient basis. Many patients do choose to spend their first night in the surgical facility, however. You will be under general anesthesia. The operation takes 2 to 5 hours depending on how extensive the surgery.
Immediately following surgery, the incisions are dressed with bandages. A tube may be inserted to drain any excess fluid. Patients may experience some swelling and discomfort, although Dr. Johnston can prescribe medication to minimize pain. Following surgery you will wear a light compression garment for several weeks. You may experience swelling, soreness, numbness of abdominal skin, bruising and tiredness for several weeks.
Stitches are usually removed 5 to 10 days following surgery. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within 2 to 4 weeks.
